Join the impossible performance

TAEX proudly presents Marina Abramović Element (MAE), a visionary NFT project by Marina Abramović. Central to this project is a digital avatar of Marina. This avatar serves as a vibrant extension of her creative vitality into the digital age, working beyond physical limitations. Marina Abramović Element offers a limited collection of authenticated digital artworks on the Ethereum blockchain. This approach democratises access, inviting a broader, global audience to participate in her evolving artistic journey. This project marks a pivotal evolution in Abramović’s career — blending her decades-long legacy with the possibilities of the digital frontier.

Avatar

Recognised as one of the most important contemporary artists of our time, Marina Abramović embarked on a quest to create her avatar as a natural extension of her lifelong exploration of presence, time and transformation. Having used her own body as both subject and medium since the early 1970s, Abramović has continually tested the limits of endurance, consciousness and the relationship between artist and audience. The avatar translates this practice into the digital realm, allowing her artistic energy to exist beyond physical constraints and linear time. Created at the age of 60, a moment of accumulated experience and heightened awareness, the avatar reflects a pivotal stage in her biography while remaining open to perpetual renewal. It enables new forms of performance that merge advanced graphics with layered narrative, extending her investigations into immateriality and duration. Functioning as a living, evolving archive, the avatar also proposes a radical rethinking of the catalogue raisonné—not as a static record of the past, but as an active, performative space in which Abramović’s work continues to unfold, resonate and generate meaning for future audiences.

This first phase of the project, titled ART, is dedicated to the evolution of Marina Abramović’s artistic practice. A special focus is placed on the use of symbolism, especially in Abramović’s iconic portraits featuring various animals, such as snakes and scorpions, as well as the artist’s interaction with certain types of objects within contexts that have become central aspects of the artist’s performances and engagement with the viewer.

Portrait with Snakes #196

A portrait with snakes captures a profound inner dialogue—a confrontation with fear. As a child, Marina once walked through the woods with her grandmother and unknowingly picked up what she thought was a stick. It turned out to be a venomous snake, a creature that could have ended her life, but, instead, etched itself into her memory as a source of lingering fear. For Marina, art is a process where she brings her fears to life, confronting and transforming them. The snake, an ancient and powerful symbol, embodies duality and transformation. It is both protector and guide, carrying wisdom and the promise of healing. Through this potent symbol, the portrait weaves together vulnerability, strength, and the artist's journey of self-renewal.

METHOD is a series dedicated to the famous Marina Abramović Method, the foundation of MAI (Marina Abramović Institute). Here, Abramović invites us to harness the wisdom of her lifelong artistic research and philosophy and become an active co-creator of her legacy. The release reframes art as a shared experience rooted in presence, endurance, and heightened awareness, guiding participants through simple but demanding exercises—often involving stillness, silence, and duration.
The artworks are divided into two symbolic groups: Daily Routines and Experiences. Daily Routines are simple acts, such as watering and plant or ironing clothes, brought to an escalation by their infinite duration.  Experiences examine the famous rituals and philosophy of Marina Abramović, depicting energy-transferring gestures.

Walking Backwards with a Mirror

Moving blindly while facing her own reflection, Abramović confronts time, memory and self-perception. The mirror collapses past and present, while walking backwards turns vulnerability into method—progress achieved through trust, risk and sustained inner focus.

Walking Backwards with a Mirror
The MAE Project is built on Ethereum, a widely used and trusted digital network chosen for its strong security, transparency and broad acceptance. This makes it a reliable foundation for creating and managing digital collectibles, ensuring that every transaction is clearly recorded and well protected. Each digital collectible is supported by a digital certificate of authenticity created using recognised, industry-standard tools. These certificates are carefully tested and independently reviewed to reduce risk and ensure they function as intended. This protects all key actions, such as buying, selling and transferring ownership.
The project is regularly updated to maintain high security standards and to reflect improvements in digital technology. Because it is based on Ethereum, the collection is easily accessible through leading digital art marketplaces, without extra technical steps. Artwork details are stored using a decentralised storage system, ensuring that records remain permanent and available even if individual servers fail, helping to preserve long-term value and trust.
