CURATORIAL STATEMENT

In her drop for TAEX, Darya Trubarova radically addresses food supply chains in contemporary economy, or, putting it simply, how meat gets on people's plates. Presented as a pastoral china set of 6 dinner plates, the digital objects are the result of a neural network’s search request, which the artist created to process several hundred images of chickens, cows, rabbits, and other animals. In Trubarova's meditative videos, cows and pigs slowly turn into pork and beef. In this metamorphosis, hybrids of two kinds appear: living beings are merged with food as a commodity form. The bizarre transformation that we observe in the videos reminds us of the fact that the inner side of the food industry is hidden from us as consumers. Watching the neatly cut fruits, vegetables, and meat products, wrapped in shiny plastic, we actually find ourselves in an idyllic world of ‘petit bourgeois’ china, which the artist draws so vividly and ironically.
