TAEX | Slow Walking Avatar Performance Auctioned off at amfAR Venezia

The sale breaks the market record for the artist's work.

TAEX is pleased to announce the sale of Slow Walking (2026), a limited-edition avatar performance by Marina Abramović powered by TAEX, to a private collector for €500,000 at amfAR Venezia.

Presented at amfAR Venezia on 6 September 2026, during the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, Slow Walking drew undeniable attention, as the evening also honoured Marina Abramović with amfAR’s Award of Inspiration, recognising her extraordinary cultural influence and enduring commitment to expanding the physical, emotional and spiritual possibilities of art.
The acquisition establishes a new market milestone for Abramović, exceeding the artist’s previous publicly documented auction record and making Slow Walking the highest-priced work by Marina Abramović publicly reported to date. Her previous auction record was set by The Life, which sold at Christie’s London in 2020 for £287,500.
The sale marks a significant moment both within Abramović’s practice and for the evolving market for digitally realised performance art. Slow Walking extends the artist’s lifelong investigation of time, presence and consciousness into the digital realm, while opening new possibilities for the collection and presentation of performance.
Created through an intensive collaboration between Marina Abramović and TAEX, with the platform acting as technical producer, Slow Walking features Abramović’s first fully life-like avatar moving at a deliberately decelerated pace. The work draws on her renowned Slow Motion Walk exercise, practised at the Marina Abramović Institute.
The monumental immersive version of Slow Walking premiered in Marina Abramović: Transforming Energy at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, presented during the 61st Venice Biennale. There, the work appears alongside five further avatar performances as part of a wider meditation on endurance, vulnerability and the transformation of energy.
